Clubfoot Journey
The Full Story
Growing up with bilateral clubfoot, I faced challenges from the very start. Countless surgeries, braces, and physical therapy sessions became a routine part of my life. While my left foot improved enough for me to manage, my right foot remained a constant source of pain and discomfort. Every step felt like a battle, and no treatment seemed to offer lasting relief.
As I got older, the pain became unbearable. Simple tasks like walking, standing, and even wearing shoes felt like punishment. I tried everything, but nothing worked. Eventually, I had to make the hardest decision of my life: a below-the-knee amputation of my right leg. It wasn't easy, but I knew it was the only way to regain control of my life.
Recovery was tough, both physically and emotionally. But once I received my prosthetic, I felt something I hadn't in years: freedom. I could move without pain, stand without struggle, and finally live without limitations. It was the end of one journey, but the beginning of a new, stronger version of myself.
Using a prosthetic has not been easy, frequent re-casting, wearing more residual limb socks than I could imagine (13 to be exact), with my newest prosthetic, I'm down to 5 socks, meaning a more comfortable socket. enduring blisters and sore/ dry skin, phantom limb pains, all come with the territory of having an amputation. But as time has gone on, I've understood what I need to do to become confident and able to live a more pain-free existence.
One of my most proudest moments, just 3 months after my amputation, I applied to be a team leader moderator at Wildscreen in Bristol. Wildscreen is a bi-annual event where all the industry experts, including wildlife presenters and producers from the world of Wildlife media, descend on Bristol for the week to showcase their amazing productions. I attended with no prosthetic, just me in my wheelchair. I had a laptop, so any attendees who brought tickets online and could not attend the event asked questions via the wildlscreen platforms, and I used a microphone to ask the questions to the panellists. It was here I had the Honour to meet Steve Backshall (Wildlife Presenter), Lizzie Daly (Wildlife Presenter), Hamza Yassin (Wildlife Presenter and Strictly Come Dancing Winner) and Dan O Neil (Wildlife Presenter). These are some of the biggest names in the media world.
I even had the honour to meet Ian Redmond, the renowned conservationist who set up the meeting between the Gorillas and Sir David Attenborough in Planet Earth. Since this event, we have kept in touch and have become good friends.
All these amazing opportunities happened because I did not lie there; I got up and made the best of the situation I was in.
